STOP AIDS in AFRICA

Kitale Orphans and Street Children Project
“Helping the less fortunate”

In 1999, Bishop Robert Makona and his wife Janerose (Jane) started the Kitale Orphans and Street Children Project with six children whose parents had died of AIDS. The Children are: Geoffrey, Rose, Edwin, Godffrey, Zachariah, and Jeremiah. The project was started at Nakhosi Village which is 12 miles west of Kitale town. Kitale town is 250 miles southwest of Nairobi City. The state of poverty of the people is extremely worrying. The following factors may help to illustrate the situation.
  1. Between 54%-65% of Kenyans live below the poverty line of one dollar per day.
  2. HIV/AIDS has had a profound negative effect on the health of Kenya’s population and significantly reversed the social and economic gains made since independence in 1963.
  3. The disease is responsible for the death of 700 Kenyans each day.
  4. The deaths have left behind over 1 million orphans 9the country has 1.9 million orphans, 60% of whom are orphaned from AIDS). Kitale district (Trans-nzoia) has alone 14,000 children orphaned from AIDS.
  5. Adult HIV prevalence rose from 5.3% in 1990 to 13.1% in 1999 and is still rising.
  6. About 80%-90% of deaths occur among young people ages 15-49 years.

We seek your favor and support in generating resources to help care and support personas affected by the HIV/AIDS, especially those living alone without care and support and the persons living positively with the HIV/AIDS without means to a livelihood.

Many orphans are very desperate, lonely, abandoned, abused, neglected, rejected and suffering of hunger, disease, nakedness and they are forgotten by the outside world. Some of them look for food at the municipal garbage site and sniff glue every day to help them go through the pain and cold nights, depression and hardships. They need someone to rescue them. They need shelter, food, clothing, education and medical care to bring them back into normal life.

We have built 3 orphanages in Kenya at Nakhosi Village, Kitale Town, and Kiminini Center.
